The Huasco Valley
Huasco Valley
The Huasco Valley is also known as “The Garden of Atacama”.
It’s located in the southern part of Atacama Region – Chile.
It’s capital Vallenar is 145 km south of Copiapó and 196 km north of La Serena
(and about 970 km southwest of San Pedro de Atacama – Antofagasta Region)
Nestled in the arid environment in the southern edge of the great Atacama Desert – considered the driest (non polar) desert of the world – this fertile valley has a priviledged climate that allows tourism all around the year.
It’s a destination for people who appreciate rural areas, nature and scenic beauty, authentic and unique local food and products and recently it becomes more and more interesting for wine lovers.
It’s a quite charming place which -inbetween the Andes Mountains and the Pacífic Ocean- offers experiences for all our senses as well as lots of human warmth.
Thanks to the Huasco River and its tributaries, there´s a long agricultural tradition.
Within the arid desert ambience, an impressive variety of delicious fruits is grown and renowned typical products are produced, three of which has designation of origen as the pisco, the “pajarete” and the famous olive oil of Huasco Valley.
Further, in more recent times, the central part of the valley has been discovered as an excelent terroir for wine production and entotourism became an important aspect for the destination.
The surprising diversity of desert flora and fauna stands out for its high degree of endemism demonstrated e.g. in the Llanos de Challe National Park.
On the other hand, the National Reserve Pingüino de Humboldt and the Marine Reserve Isla Chañaral are home to an exceptional marine biodiversity, and especially during the summer season, a variety of cetaceans can be observed including the largest animal of the planet: the blue whale.
The landscapes provide stunning and varied scenic beauties, and every so often, when a series of factors come together precisely, the desert blooms and becomes a sea of colours, shapes, and fragrances where life appears in all its facets.
And let's not forget the spectacular Atacama night sky, famous for its favorable atmospheric conditions for astronomical observation.
