A day trip to the southern tip of the Atacama Region - a place capable of surprising.
We start early towards the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve, crossing the wide landscapes of the desert and the Atacameña coastal mountain range on the way.
Arriving at the small Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno we begin a navigation of 2 ½ hours approx. for this marine reserve and its impressive and fragile ecosystem which is directly related to the Humboldt current.
Chañaral Island and its surroundings are the habitat of a great variety of resident and migratory species of marine fauna such as dolphins, sea lions, chungungos and a large number of birds - among the latter is the world's largest colony of Humboldt Penguins. In addition, during the summer you can see various marine giants such as the fin whale or the blue whale - the 2 largest animals on planet earth.
Back on the mainland we enjoyed a menu lunch in a restaurant in this fishermen cove.
On our way back we take the time for a brief stop in the small and picturesque oasis of Carrizalillo and with a bit of luck we will come across native terrestrial fauna such as foxes and guanacos on the way.

Departure Vallenar: 07.30 am - Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno - Pingüino de Humboldt National Reserve - Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno - Carrizalillo - Vallenar (arrival: 04.30 pm approx.)
